Publication des codes du BioHydroGenerator 09/04/2019BioHydroGenerator is a collection of programs developed by Erwann Fillol for Action Against Hunger and used for its food crisis early warning system in the Sahel. These programs, which produce biomass and water availability maps for livestock farmers, are based on satellite remote sensing data. These biomass and water maps provide access to vulnerability indicators for livestock farming, particularly for nomadic herders in the Sahel region. This traditional, extensive, and nomadic livestock farming in these regions, known as pastoralism, is extremely sensitive to climatic conditions and the quality of the rainy season, or West African monsoon. These programs are grouped in the form of 3 separate and complementary modules: • DeCompressor (v2.1): This module downloads, prepares and verifies the satellite database before use by other modules. • BioGenerator (v5.1): This module calculates biomass production and establishes maps of annual production anomalies and the vulnerability index. • HydroGenerator (v4.1): This module calculates the water accessibility index and creates maps of annual water presence anomalies. The objective of these tools is mainly to provide a status of the pasture resources available to breeders at the end of the rainy season, because it is mainly from these reserves that breeders will have to feed their animals until the following rainy season. Water resources, given by real-time detection of surface water points, can be monitored during the dry seasonYou can find the codes, user guide and contacts on https://github.com/ACF-WARO/BioHydroGenerator BioHydroGenerator is an aggregation of programs developed by Erwann Fillol for Action Against Hunger and used for its early warning system on food crisis in the Sahel. These programs, which generate biomass and water availability maps for pastoralists, are based on satellite remote sensing data. The biomass and water maps provide access to vulnerability indicators for livestock, particularly for nomadic pastoralists in the Sahel region. This traditional, extensive and nomadic livestock breeding, called pastoralism, is extremely sensitive to climatic conditions and the quality of rain, or West African monsoon. Those programs are grouped into 3 separate and complementary modules: • DeCompressor (v2.1): this module downloads, prepares and checks the satellite database before use by the other modules. • BioGenerator (v5.1): this module calculates biomass production and generates maps of annual production anomalies and vulnerability index. • HydroGenerator (v4.1): this module calculates the water availability index and maps out annual anomalies in water presence. The main objective of these tools is to show the status of pasture resources for pastoralists at the end of the rainy season, as these are mainly the resources pastoralists have to feed their animals on until the next rainy season. Water resources provided by real-time sensing of surface water points can be monitored during the dry season. This user guide first explains the theoretical aspects, and then describes how to use the tools. Some practical examples describe the steps from downloading the data to developing maps and time profiles.Codes, user guide and contacts can be found in https://github.com/ACF-WARO/BioHydroGenerator
