Analysis report on biomass production in 2022 in the Sahel

  • Very good rainy season in the Sahelian zone of West Africa
  • Above normal biomass production in most of the Sahelian zone
  • Very good biomass production in the western block composed of central and southern Senegal, southern Mauritania, central and southern Mali and Burkina Faso
  • Good biomass production in Chad, except in the south of the country
  • Low to very low production in the Central Sahel, particularly in south-west Niger
  • Below average biomass production in coastal countries, particularly in Nigeria
  • Security context strongly hindering herds mobility and access to pasture and water resources in the Central Sahel, in addition to restrictions on mobility to coastal countries, particularly Benin and Togo

2022 Biomass Production Analysis Report for the Sahel

  • Très bonne saison des pluies sur la zone sahélienne d’Afrique de l’Ouest
  • Production de biomasse supérieure aux normales sur la quasi-totalité de la zone sahélienne
  • Très bonne production de biomasse dans le bloc ouest composé du centre et du sud Sénégal, le sud de la Mauritanie, le centre et le sud du Mali et le Burkina Faso
  • Bonne production de biomasse sur le Tchad, excepté sur le sud du pays
  • Faible à très faible production sur le Sahel Central particulièrement le sud-ouest du Niger
  • Production de biomasse inférieure à la moyenne dans les pays côtiers particulièrement au Nigéria
  • Contexte sécuritaire entravant fortement la mobilité des troupeaux et l’accès aux pâturages et aux ressources en eau dans le Sahel Central qui s’ajoute aux restrictions à la mobilité vers les pays côtiers particulièrement vers le Bénin et le Togo

  • Rainfall breaks observed at the beginning of the season
  • Very good biomass production in central and southern Senegal, central and southern Mali, Burkina Faso, and central Chad
  • Below normal biomass production in northern Senegal, southwestern Mauritania
  • Much below normal biomass production in the tri-border area, particularly in southwestern Niger
  • Below normal biomass production in coastal countries, particularly Benin and Nigeria, and below normal production in Togo and Côte d’Ivoire
  • End of rainy season expected to be favourable across the Sahel
