Biomass production analysis report for Burkina Faso in 2025

30/01/202630/01/2026
  • positive rainy season
  • Positive rainy season with localized flooding
  • Winter arrived late across much of the country, but pockets of drought persist.
  • Biomass production above the national average:
    • Very high production levels in the Centre-North, the Mouhoun Loop, the North and the Sahel
    • Average to low production levels in the Cascades, the Centre and the Central Plateau
    • Very low production in parts of the Central-East and Central-West
  • Difficult security situation at the borders and on transhumance corridors
  • Internal restrictions on mobility and limitations on cross-border transhumance to Benin and Togo

Biomasse

Biomass production analysis report for 2025 in the Sahel

08/12/202508/12/2025
  • Rainfall totals generally normal to above average in Sahel countries but normal to below average in Gulf of Guinea countries
  • Biomass production above average across the Sahelian belt
  • Biomass production low to very low in southwestern Mauritania and western Senegal
  • Biomass production moderate to low in coastal countries, though higher than in 2024
  • Low exposure of the region to vulnerability linked to biomass production
  • River flows normal to above average
  • Security context strongly hindering herd mobility and access to pastures
  • Significant movements of displaced populations with livestock across several areas of the region

Biomasse

Biomass production analysis report for Niger in 2025

06/11/202506/11/2025
  • The rainy season is favorable for the development of pastoral resources on the Niger River.
  • Overall biomass production is in excess across all pastoral areas.
  • Animal losses following flooding caused by heavy rainfall
  • Animal mobility is disrupted by insecurity, particularly in the regions of Tillabéri, northwestern Tahoua, southern Maradi and Diffa, compounded by recurring animal thefts.
  • An economic context characterized by falling cereal prices and unfavorable terms of trade for livestock farmers.

Biomasse

Biomass production analysis report for Mali in 2025

30/10/202530/10/2025
  • Biomass production is generally above average for the country
  • A very significant deficit in biomass production has been observed in the northern part of the regions of Timbuktu, Gao, Ménaka and Kidal, suggesting an early lean season for livestock farming.
  • Normal to excess biomass production observed in the southern part of the northern, central and western regions of the country
  • Expansion of terrorist activities in the south and west of the country is severely disrupting the movement of people and goods.

Biomasse

Biomass production analysis report for Mauritania in 2025

29/10/202529/10/2025
  • Normal to above-average rainfall with extreme flooding of the Senegal River
  • Overall positive biomass production in Mauritania
  • Development of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in several provinces of the country
  • Existence of some pockets of biomass production with deficits in the wilayas of Hodh Ech Chargui, Brakna, Trarza and Assaba
  • Risks of an early lean season in the Hodh Ech Chargui province due to resource pressure
  • Disruption of transhumance routes to Mali due to security conditions

Rapport d’analyse de production de biomasse en 2025 sur le nord de la Côte d’Ivoire

27/10/202529/10/2025
  • Biomass production in northern Côte d’Ivoire is equal to or above average, with some areas experiencing annual biomass production almost equivalent to the maximum production levels recorded over the past 25 years.
  • Overall vulnerability index ranging from neutral to positive across all departments in northern Ivory Coast
  • The security situation in the Sahel is leading to continuous flows of transhumant herders from Burkina Faso and Mali towards the main refugee reception areas in northern Ivory Coast (Bounkani and Tchologo), and is intensifying in other regions (Bagoué and Folon).

Sahelian biomass production analysis bulletin at rainy mid-season 2025

26/09/2025
  • Early to normal start of the rainy season in the Sahel; late onset in coastal countries
  • Above-average biomass production across the Sahelian belt
  • Low to very low biomass production in southwestern Mauritania, western Senegal, and the northern edge of the Sahelian belt
  • Weak biomass production in coastal countries, more pronounced in Nigeria
  • River flows above average, causing flooding
  • Favorable end of the rainy season expected across the Sahel
  • Potential vulnerability for herders in areas with low to very low biomass production

Biomasse

Biomass production analysis report in 2024 in northern Côte d’Ivoire

06/12/202406/12/2024
  • Rainy season generally poor in the northern regions, marked by a late start and early end of the rains and some extreme rains leading to flooding in certain localities
  • Biomass production well below normal in northern Côte d’Ivoire, with the lowest annual production recorded in 25 years in some places
  • Deterioration of the security situation in the Sahel leading to an increase in the flow of transhumant herders from Burkina Faso and Mali to the main refugee-hosting departments in the north of Côte d’Ivoire
