Persistent biomass production deficits in the departments of M’Bengué and Ouangolodougou. Increased risk of forage deficit at the end of the dry season in the departments of Doropo, Téhini and Minignan due to early peaks in biomass. Biomass Biomass production analysis report for Senegal in 2026 26/10/202626/10/2026 End-of-season slowdown: nationally, biomass production remains close to the average, but is declining compared to 2025 In September, daily biomass productivity was below the average profile in most of the monitored departments. Localized deficits in the starting and transit areas: production is below average in the Ferlo and the river valley (Matam, Ranérou, Kanel, Linguère, Podor) as well as in the peanut basin (Kaffrine, Kaolack). Surplus situation in the south and east: the reception areas of Kédougou, Tambacounda, Kolda and Ziguinchor are recording above average production. Overall vulnerability neutral: the national index is neutral and only the Matam department has a moderate deficit. However, pockets of significant to very significant deficits appear along the Senegal River, north of Matam and east of Podor. Biomass Biomass production analysis report for 2026 in the Sahel 17/10/202617/10/2026 Rainy season characterized by high rainfall variability and with overall below-average conditions, in a context of a return to El Niño-related climatic patterns. Biomass production was slightly below average across Sahelian and pastoral areas, showing a sharp decline compared with the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Severe biomass deficits were observed in Mauritania, northern Mali, eastern Niger, and across the Lake Chad Basin extending into Sudan. Biomass production remained close to or above average in most Sudanian and coastal zones. Insecurity and mobility restrictions continue to limit access to grazing resources. Biomass Alert note on the situation of biomass production in Mauritania at mid-season 2026 14/10/202614/10/2026 Biomass production in mid-season 2026 returns to 85% of the reference average, after two seasons with a large surplus. The agropastoral provinces of the south and southeast, which concentrate the bulk of the national livestock, are the most affected: Guidimakha, Gorgol, Assaba, Hodh Chargui, and Hodh El Gharbi. Brakna (65%) and Tagant (59%) are also of concern. Risk of early reduction of pastures, concentration of herds and tensions around water and fodder resources during the 2026-2027 dry season, particularly in Hodh Chargui.
