  • Security context: The situation is mixed, more fragile in Bounkani, with tensions linked to cross-border flows and threats
  • Markets: functional but with little direct support for the pastoral sector
  • Terms of the trade: generally favorable to the farmers

  • The overall agro-pastoral situation is favorable, with a good condition
    weight gain in animals at the beginning of the dry season
  • Progressive degradation of pastures observed in the north and north-central areas
    marking the beginning of the pastoral lean season
  • Water availability is generally satisfactory, but there are pockets of
    persistent vulnerabilities in the Ferlo
  • Intensification of north-south transhumance movements, leading to
    increasing pressure on reception areas
  • Markets that favor farmers in the short term, with prices of
    Livestock prices are generally high, and cereals are declining.
  • Terms of trade generally favorable, particularly in the
    central and southern parts of the surveillance zone

Pastoral Monitoring Bulletin of Mauritania – December 2025 – January 2026

  • Suspension of cross-border mobility related to transhumance between Mauritania and Mali for security reasons
  • High concentrations of livestock in monitored pastoral areas
  • Sufficient availability of pastoral resources in the monitoring sites, despite recurring bushfires
  • The animals were in generally satisfactory body condition, with suspected cases of vitamin deficiencies and animal diseases (foot-and-mouth disease, PPR, pasteurellosis).
  • National livestock vaccination campaign underway
  • Terms of the goat/sorghum exchange favorable to agropastoral households in Hodh Chargui and Guidimakha
  • TDE unfavorable to Brakna and Gorgol
  • The continued arrival of refugees in Hodh Chargui is increasing the pressure on local resources and services.
