  • Low exposure of the region to vulnerability linked to biomass production
  • River flows normal to above average
  • Security context strongly hindering herd mobility and access to pastures
  • Significant movements of displaced populations with livestock across several areas of the region

  • Surplus hydrology in the Tchologo but localized deficit in Youndouo
  • Animal health is generally good with fair to satisfactory body condition, but there are disease outbreaks in Toumoukoro, Nafana, Tougbo, Bouna and Youndouo.
  • Fragile security due to recurring livestock thefts
  • Increased pressure in areas hosting refugee populations, intensifying competition for resources
  • Accessible markets but significant price disparities between departments

  • Overall biomass production is in excess across all pastoral areas.
  • Animal losses following flooding caused by heavy rainfall
  • Animal mobility is disrupted by insecurity, particularly in the regions of Tillabéri, northwestern Tahoua, southern Maradi and Diffa, compounded by recurring animal thefts.
  • An economic context characterized by falling cereal prices and unfavorable terms of trade for livestock farmers.

Biomass production analysis report for Mali in 2025

  • Biomass production is generally above average for the country
  • A very significant deficit in biomass production has been observed in the northern part of the regions of Timbuktu, Gao, Ménaka and Kidal, suggesting an early lean season for livestock farming.
  • Normal to excess biomass production observed in the southern part of the northern, central and western regions of the country
  • Expansion of terrorist activities in the south and west of the country is severely disrupting the movement of people and goods.
