Biomass production analysis report for Niger in 2025

  • The rainy season is favorable for the development of pastoral resources on the Niger River.
  • Overall biomass production is in excess across all pastoral areas.
  • Animal losses following flooding caused by heavy rainfall
  • Animal mobility is disrupted by insecurity, particularly in the regions of Tillabéri, northwestern Tahoua, southern Maradi and Diffa, compounded by recurring animal thefts.
  • An economic context characterized by falling cereal prices and unfavorable terms of trade for livestock farmers.

Biomass production analysis report for Mali in 2025

  • Biomass production is generally above average for the country
  • A very significant deficit in biomass production has been observed in the northern part of the regions of Timbuktu, Gao, Ménaka and Kidal, suggesting an early lean season for livestock farming.
  • Normal to excess biomass production observed in the southern part of the northern, central and western regions of the country
  • Expansion of terrorist activities in the south and west of the country is severely disrupting the movement of people and goods.

  • Biomass production in northern Côte d’Ivoire is equal to or above average, with some areas experiencing annual biomass production almost equivalent to the maximum production levels recorded over the past 25 years.
  • Overall vulnerability index ranging from neutral to positive across all departments in northern Ivory Coast
  • The security situation in the Sahel is leading to continuous flows of transhumant herders from Burkina Faso and Mali towards the main refugee reception areas in northern Ivory Coast (Bounkani and Tchologo), and is intensifying in other regions (Bagoué and Folon).

  • Low to very low biomass production in southwestern Mauritania, western Senegal, and the northern edge of the Sahelian belt
  • Weak biomass production in coastal countries, more pronounced in Nigeria
  • River flows above average, causing flooding
  • Favorable end of the rainy season expected across the Sahel
  • Potential vulnerability for herders in areas with low to very low biomass production
